124 million Mexicans live in an area five and a half times the size of Germany. Mexican wrestling is called “lucha libre” and is very popular. The wrestlers compete against one another wearing masks.
6. DAY OF THE DEAD
From 31 October to 2 November, Mexico celebrates the “Day of the Dead”. People dress up and commemorate their dead relatives with a festival.
Mexico officially recognizes 62 indigenous languages. Nahuatl, spoken by the Aztecs, and Yucatec Maya, spoken by the Mayans, are wide spread.
7. SLIP-SLIDING AWAY …
The sinking city: Mexico City was founded on soft ground and sinks 15 centimeters every year. Because of this, many old buildings are crooked.
8. GO FOR COLOR!
The carnival in Veracruz is world-renowned. To kick off the event, the bad mood is burnt symbolically before starting with the parades and dancing.
THE MUNICIPALITY OF SAN JUAN CHAMULA HAS ITS OWN LEGAL SYSTEM. ACCORDING TO MAYAN TRADITION, MEN ARE ALLOWED TO HAVE THREE WIVES AT THE SAME TIME.
9. IMMERSE YOURSELF IN CULTURE
Just off of Cancun’s coast, there is an underwater museum. There, divers can appreciate around 400 sculptures created by the artist Jason deCaires Taylor.
10. FRUITY THIRST QUENCHERS
Crazy for soda: the residents of Mexico drink more soda than anyone else in the world. Approximately 163 liters per person each year.
